1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
2. Coat an 8 inch round baking dish with the butter.
3. Arrange the bacon in a spiral fashion in the baking dish.
4. Drape the ends of the slices over the pan edge to fold over filling.
5. Arrange 1/3 of the potatoes over the bacon, and sprinkle with 1/3 Fontina cheese.
6. Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes and cheese.
7. Season with the salt and pepper.
8. Fold the bacon over the filling to form the upper layer.
9. Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 1 hour, or until potatoes are tender.
10. Drain any drippings, and cut into wedges to serve.
